The Bristol Buddhist Centre in North Bristol, UK is one of many Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) Centres across the world running public Buddhism and Meditation events, retreats, weekend events and weekly public classes. The Centre is also host to many visiting teachers and practitioners using the space for healing, yoga, tai chi and many other events. More details about events can be obtained by ringing the Centre on 0117 9249991 http://bristol-buddhist-centre.org or the website:
Achintya has lived and worked in South Bristol since 1985 and while teaching and working at the Bristol Buddhist Centre he always wanted to see introductory Buddhist meditation teaching happening in South Bristol. After his Ordination into the Western Buddhist Order and with the help of Lynn Wiltshire, a local Yoga teacher and Buddhist, they began to run a series of 6-week Buddhist Meditation courses at City Farm and other locations around South Bristol, supported by a team of Buddhist meditators. Lynne has now moved to Cardiff and is unable to support these classes on a regular basis, but will be dropping by when she can to give the occasional Yoga session and to say hello on a Friday evening.
The Team has always had an important role in helping to shape and run these classes and now includes another Order Member called Kumuda, as well as people who came originally cam along to our classes to learn to meditate and are now members of the team.
Our 6-week classes proved very popular and early in 2005 we decided to begin regular term-time Friday night Buddhist meditation drop-in classes. We have now built up a group of around 25 regular visitors and from September onwards our classes are for those who have already learned meditation with us, or at the Bristol Buddhist Centre in Gloucester Rd.
We will be running some Beginners courses in South Bristol early in 2008 Please phone Achintya on 0117 9531106 to register your interest and encourage your friends to come along too - it's fun to learn to meditate together? If you come on one of our Beginners courses, or have done a Beginners course at the Bristol Buddhist Centre, then you can come along to our Friday evening regular's evenings and deepen your interest in Buddhism and practice your meditation with others.
Our drop-in meditation classes run during term time only every Friday evening at Windmill Hill Community Centre, Vivien St, just off Summerville Terrace near the top entrance in Victoria Park, near the Park Lodge. Classes run from 7.0pm to 9.15pm. The classes cost £5 or £3 low wage.
We also run a regular drop-in Tuesday morning meditation practice session at the Community Centre from 7.15am to 8.15am. during school term times. This is a small, non-teaching and non-led session for those who know how to meditate and want to practice once a week with others. Currently 4 or 5 people come along on a regular basis. Class fee £3 per session.
Details about the classes are available on this website (see the Events Calendar), and you can get more informaiton by phoning Achintya on 0117 9531106 or by emailing enquiries@south-bristol-buddhist-meditation.org.uk
